SUB GENRE
We looked at all the possible sub genres available under the horror genre. We picked out two possible genres, paranormal and zombie. However we researched which was the most popular genres at the time (audience research page) and concluded that zombie/pandemic type genre would be best suited to our horror. The already mentioned Dawn Of The Dead (2004) was remade due to the popularity of the original 1978 version which made it to number 10 in the '100 best horror films' on timeout.com. This gave us further motivation to choose Zombie as our sub genre in hope it will become popular enough to be remade in years to come. Following from this we also mentioned the 2011 horror Paranormal Activity 3 which is clearly a paranormal sub genre which became our second choice, we knew the vast audience these series films had already and discovered the 5th film made would be out around the same time we are due to release ours. This further helped us to choose the Zombie sub genre as if we were to go down the Paranormal horror genre we would be competing with other already existent paranormal films which evidently could effect our potential audience, whereas no Zombie movies were due to be released at the same time as ours therefore we could appeal to a wider audience without potential competitors.

In the end we decided to go with zombie over paranormal purely because we feel it has a much larger potential audience to cater and market to. Following on from this we believe we can be more s lot more effective in this sub genre with our budget we are working with and the equipment that is available to us. Furthermore we are shown more examples of just how large the Zombie sub genre popularity is, this is because along with films Zombies/monsters of the same kind have penetrated the gaming market. An example of this would be the 'Dead Rising' game from 2006. Adding to this it's varied away from the cinema and towards television where this sub genre has made it into television series such as the very successful 2006 series of 'The Walking Dead' which is on going. Due to our research we think our film will have the potential to make large amounts of money based on figures made by previous films of the same sub genre. 'Resident Evil Afterlife' earned $43 million in the first weekend, the 2009 horror 'Zombieland' took $24 million just from its opening weekend and finally 'Dawn Of The Dead' remake made $102 million worldwide before leaving the cinemas. Therefore we believe our upcoming film potentially has the chance to become the next big selling zombie film due to our research on Zombie films. J.B
why our audience liked our particular sub genre
Researching answers helped our group to decide what the contents of our trailer will be and also to try and incorporate what people like to see in a zombie film into our film. Therefore this would allow us to gain the largest potential audience possible. I am legend (2007) also proved to be a high grossing and very popular film in the zombie genre. Although the creature which are cause the outbreak are mutant creatures many fans of the zombie genre would class them as modern day zombies even though they are not revolved around blood and falling off body parts. The film itself is based on a book written by Richard Matheson and is set in the 1950s. We thought this was a good idea to mirror into our film as it would attract our modern day audience and would allow us to add a higher sense of mystery to leave our audience questioning the plot. Furthermore it would also help us to set ourselves aside from many competing classic Zombie films if we added a Zombie like twist. J.B
SILHOUETTE
|
We also decided we wanted to use silhouetted characters. This is because we feel as though they are much more effective in a trailer and has a larger impact on the audience. We believe this because in a trailer the aim is to try and not to give too much away to the viewing audience and with the use of blacked out characters the audience is left guessing the sub genre of the film and what lies behind these characters. We got this idea from the film 'I Am Legend' 2007 as we feel it was so popular due to the infected people and the constantly alone and isolated protagonist. We feel it is effective because the infected are referred to as carnivorous monsters that fear light and live solely to spread their contagion to any remaining living creature instead of the typical slow zombies etc which leaves the audience guessing what they are expecting from these characters.
